YouTube Is No Longer Supported

One of our top priorities at Boom Learning is ensuring student data privacy, which includes keeping their experience ad free. However, YouTube is making changes to how they serve their content, and that means we have to change as well. YouTube has announced it will be inserting ads into all videos (including Made For Kids). With this change, YouTube content will no longer meet the no advertising criteria for delivery to many schools. As a result, we will no longer allow new YouTube videos to be embedded into Boom Cards listed in the store starting June 15th 2021.

We recommend you move your videos to Vimeo Pro or Starter and relink them to your Boom Cards. We will be investigating other options as well, but we can only implement options that do not track student behavior for advertising purposes.

As of July 14th 2022, YouTube videos can be embedded into decks that are private published (for personal use). Embedding a YouTube URL into your deck will trigger a warning that the deck contains a private video. Boom Cards that contain private video cannot be listed in the Boom Learning Store.

Please direct questions about this change to help@boomlearning.com.

Information About Embedding Video

We recommend using video primarily for decks you use with your own students where you can confirm that the video will play given your unique configuration of filtering, browser settings, and more.

If you choose to offer a deck for sale with video, please design your deck so that it has value without the video. Also, let buyers know that they may have to adjust browser and filtering settings for the video to play. Please advise your buyers that video is not reliable when played in apps, but will play in standard (not private or incognito) browser mode.

Be aware that schools may block or filter video. Also, certain browser modes, such as private or incognito, will also prevent videos from playing.

Note: Video is an experimental feature. It doesn't reliably work in all situations.

Which Videos You May Include

Videos you include in your decks should be videos that either

    a. you created and have full permission for all the included elements or

    b. you have obtained permission from the video's creator to include in your deck.

Never be afraid to reach out to a video creator and ask if you can include their video. The worst that can happen is that they say no, which is the default anyway.

No Advertisements and Privacy

You may not show advertisements to students.

For Vimeo, you need to have a Starter or higher account so that your users do not see ads. You must go to Interaction Tools and change the end Screen to "Empty". You also may not collect personally identifiable information from any user via Vimeo link. You must turn off all marketing settings that collect information before including a link in a deck. You can create an Embed preset where you set After video to Empty.

No videos may be included in a deck that are essentially advertisements (unless the purpose of the deck is to educate students about how advertising works). If we discover a deck that is serving advertisements to students or attempting to collect personal information from students, we will depublish it and we may require you to offer refunds to purchasers. You may also be subject to civil liability from the users if you attempt to collect personally identifiable information from them.

You can read more about Vimeo play settings here - https://vimeo.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/224972808-Customizing-the-video-player.

For private publish, you may use videos from Vimeo free accounts, which do track students and which may include advertisements, if and only if, (a) you have explicit consent from the student and parent or (b) your school policy permits such use without explicit consent and the local law that applies to you does not require explicit consent.
